Intergenerational

Oil on 13in x 17in Canvas

Before my brother moved across the country, my parents would often babysit my nephew for a day and take him on little trips to local destinations. The photo my mom sent to me is of my dad and my nephew at a lake. Ironically, they are both standing in the same stance as each other, and both wearing red tops and black sunglasses. I believe my dad may have been teaching my nephew (his grandson) how to skip stones, or he was pointing something out across the body of water.

The image touched my heart and made me miss my family. It also influenced me to acknowledge and reflect on the special bond between a grandparent and grandchild. The relationship between my dad and my nephew is very genuine and wholesome. There is something unique about the relationship between a grandparent and grandchild. It is different from the love between a parent and child. It embraces a strong pureness in friendship. They are polar opposites- in age, in size, in skills, and in experiences. Yet their bond is tight and unbreakable. The resilient love my dad has for my nephew is a beautiful thing to witness.
